Thaddus leads derby spree

DON’T tell the fans of Iberostar Tenerife that pre-season friendlies don’t count. The southern air suited them as they travelled down from La Laguna and crushed inter-island rivals Gran Canaria 79-54 in Adeje’s Las Torres sports.

A packed house of over 1,200 saw new American signing Thaddus McFadden lead the assault with a man-of-the-match, 15-point haul.

Tenerife were sharper from the start, and, by the halfway mark, they led 40-25, the visitors’ only glimmer of hope came with a third-quarter, 24-21 advantage. But the punishment resumed with an 18-5 send-off.

Gran Canaria will point out that they had a couple of key players missing, and that it will be a lot closer in the return friendly later this month, as well as the home and away league clashes.

But Iberostar Coach Txus Vidorreta was extremely happy with the win. “Defensively, we had a very good tone,” he said. “I’ve seen the team with clear ideas and wanting to do it right.”

This weekend, Tenerife are on the mainland in Tarragona, with friendlies against Zaragoza today (Friday), and Partizan on Sunday.
