Tenerife swept aside by class of Osasuna

Osasuna 2 CD Tenerife 0

GOALS from Juan Villar and Oier saw off lacklustre Tenerife and enabled the home side to reach the play-off positions for the first time this season.

The Tenerife team, suffering with casualties, were lucky not to slip back into the relegation places thanks to the convincing 3-1 defeat of Cordoba by Cadiz.

Osasuna are undefeated this season at El Sadar, where the club celebrated their 98th anniversary with three more points. Yet Tenerife had the first real chance in the ninth minute.

Luis Perez played an excellent through-ball into the path of Naranjo, who failed to take advantage of being one-on-one with Osasuna keeper Rubén Martínez.

The Galician goalkeeper not only saved his team but changed the face of the match, as Osasuna scored on the counter-attack, almost immediately.

Barja took the ball deep into Tenerife half and cut it back across goal, to where Juan Villar was waiting. And there was no mistake from the former Tenerife player, who scored his third consecutive home goal at El Sadar, playing the ball through Aveldaño’s legs and in, off the post.

Keeper Dani made an athletic attempt to save it, but the ball had already crossed the line.

Malbasic hit back for Tenerife with a solo run down the left side towards the Osasuna goal-line, but he had no support and the home team regained possession easily.

The biggest battle was in midfield, with high pressure from Osasuna, who controlled the game throughout.

In time added on at the end of the first half, Tenerife received a blow after an action-replay of the first goal. A Naranjo shot hit Aridane, and Villar started a counter, which was continued by Torres. It led to a corner for Osasuna, which was launched immediately.

Camille received the ball and shot, but it was blocked by the Tenerife defence, unfortunately, only as far as Oier, who rocketed it into the roof of the net from 12 yards.

Osasuna resumed after the break, looking for a third goal to seal victory. Villar was the first to try, after three minutes, and Torres was the next to shoot, a few minutes later, only to put the ball over the bar.

Malbasic battled as a lone figure up front for Tenerife and put a good chance inches wide of Rubén’s goal after a poor clearance by Aridane. He had another opening in the 75th minute, one on one with the Osasuna keeper, but he stopped the danger.

Tenerife were, at least, encouraged with these chances, but the home-team coach made some changes, bringing on Vidal for Barja, and tightened the defence with three centres and two wide men.

The last 15 minutes were very similar, with Villar having a good chance, only to find the side-netting, and Malbasiç striking another shot that hit the post.

Ultimately, it was a comfortable win for a team who are climbing the league table and are now in seventh place. Meanwhile. Tenerife coach Oltra and his men are still feeling the pressure at the other end of the table. They sit in 18th place, and are again in danger of slipping into the bottom three.

Their next match is a must-win against a Rayo Majadahonda team high in confidence, after back-to-back successes against Numancia and Almeria.
