Swift not quick enough to dodge a rock

BEN SWIFT, a racing cyclist with Team Sky, clipped a rock while in training, descending a Tenerife road with reigning Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas, which led to a crash that sent him to hospital.

A team announcement said that 31-year-old Swift had not broken any bones. but he suffered multiple contusions and an injury to his spleen, which was causing bleeding. But doctors were able to stabilise that injury.

A statement from the team management said: “A procedure was performed to reduce the risks of this bleeding starting again, and Swift will remain in close observation for the next few days.”

“Swifty suffered quite a heavy crash while out training,” said team doctor Inigo Sarriegui. “Thankfully, though, he didn’t lose consciousness and was aware of the incident afterward.

“We will continue to monitor him over the coming days, but, 24 hours on from the crash, he is already feeling better.”

Swift, a reliable team domestique, already has two races under his belt this year: the recent Tour de la Provence in France, and, prior to that, the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, in which he was third in Stage 2, and went on to complete the race.
