TENERIFE, faced with the tough task of improving on last season’s heroics, have made the best possible start by winning their first two games in Spain´s elite Liga Endesa.

The launch pad was an 81-65 win at Burgos last Sunday. They took the first two quarters 19-16 and 19-10, shared a 19-19 third, and finished with a 24-20 sign-off.

American Mike Tobey is already showing his worth to the team, his 15 points leading the way in a solid team effort. And captain Nico Richotti was close behind with 11 points.

Just as pleasing as the win was the return to action of Madrid-born Javier Beiran, who was out for 10 months with injury.

Wednesday night brought a tougher fight, this time at home against UCAM Murcia. But with spirit and determination, Tenerife ran out 84-78 winners.

Another new boy grabbed the limelight this time, Polish signing Mateusz Ponitka scoring nine points and impressing with his all-round contribution to the team.

Mike Tobey equalled him with the same total, and the scoring all down the roster was again strong.

The quarter scores were 21-17, 18-24, 20-23, and a storming home finish with 25-14.

Tenerife have another tough home game on Sunday, at 5-30pm against Valencia at the Pabellón Santiago Martin, in La Laguna.

Three wins on the trot, and pleasing the home fans, is their twin inspiration.
