Sergio’s big-time return

FROM La Laguna to America’s NBA league, Sergio Rodriguez has become a world-class player, and he returns home next month to show off his skills for Spain in a three-team tournament.

Sergio (pictured), spotted as a teenage prospect at CB Canarias, was snapped up by Estudiantes for the Spanish Elite League in 2004. And further success as a Spain international earned him a call-up from Phoenix Suns in 2006.

His career still blazes brightly after stop-offs at Philadelphia 76ers, Portland Timbers and Real Madrid, plus a second chance with Philadelphia, where he is still a big cheese at 31.

The crowd at La Laguna’s Pabellon Santiago Martin will give him a warm homecoming with the Spanish team when they take on Tunisia and Belgium in a three-team challenge, from 7-9th August.

The bearded wonder delighted young hopefuls in Santa Cruz last week by demonstrating his skills at a summer training camp.

And his heart will beat with pride when he takes to the Iberostar Tenerife court for the first time.

The much smaller court of CB Canarias, on the other side of La Laguna, was where he learned his game, decades before Iberostar moved to their current 5,000-seater stadium.

His brief visit will inspire hopes that he might return to grace the Iberostar team towards the end of his American adventure.

But at present, Sergio still has plenty to offer in the multi-million setting of the NBA.
