Rain clobbers Valencia

THE Valencia region was flooded on Sunday, after more than 1,020 litres of water fell in just a few hours.

Three people were rescued by firefighters after being trapped in their car in Alginet, while the Segura river burst its banks in Elche de la Sierra, swamping the area.

According to state weather agency Aemet, it hadn’t rained so heavily in June since 2002.

Emergency services were working to clear the roads affected by the downpour, while footage uploaded on to social media showed hailstones falling in the Onda area of Valencia.

Meanwhile, here in the South, people basked in bright sunshine for much of the day.
