Man steals taxi with baby in it

A SLICK car thief hijacked a taxi at Tenerife North airport as a family and their luggage were dropped off, driving away with a five-month-old baby boy still on the back seat.

The Moroccan family, mum, dad and two older daughters, arrived at the airport at 3pm last Sunday and went to help the driver unload the cases, leaving the infant inside because of the wind and rain.

At this stage, the unsuspecting thief jumped into the car and fled. The family and cabbie were horrified, and the thief must have been concerned after discovering the baby aboard.

The taxi driver notified the airport’s National Police, who alerted officers in La Laguna and Santa Cruz.

Happily, 12 minutes later, the crisis was over because the car, a Toyota Corolla, was found in a Santa Cruz parking lot, with the baby safe and well in the back seat. He was soon reunited with his frantic parents.

National Police have been studying CCTV footage from the airport and the parking area, in the hope of identifying the thief.
