The fiestas in honour of Nuestra Seņora de Candelaria are possibly the most important fiestas in the Canary Islands.
The fiesta which commemorates the first appearance of the virgin to the guanches aborigines which occurred in the town of Candelaria is held in August every year and attracts thousands of visitors from all over the Archipelago many of whom walk to Candelaria as a form of pilgrimage to thank the virgin for the favours she has granted.
The 15th August is the day when the floral offering is made to the virgin and is a festival in the whole of Tenerife.
The fiesta runs from August 5th to August 20th and includes a wide variety of both religious and cultural events.
Among other events there will be a demonstration of Canarian sports in the Plaza de la Patrona on Saturday 5th at 11am, Mariachi night will take place on Wednesday 9th August at 9.30pm and the famous Canarian folklore group Los Sabadeños will perform on Thursday 10th August and Friday 11th August in the Plaza de la Patrona at 9.30pm.
Craig David will be giving a concert in Candelaria football ground on Saturday 12th August at 10pm and there will be a demonstration of lucha Canaria Canarian wrestling on Sunday 13th August at 9pm.
The Romeria will be held on Monday 14th August from 5pm and there will be a huge firework display after dark.
All in all the fiestas of Candelaria are well worth a visit and the local police and civil protection authority will be setting up a special security operation to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
