Cool-hand Claire sees off champion - 12.06.2009
IT was a night of upsets in the Oasis Fm Tenerife 8 Ball Singles tournament, with many of the top players getting knocked out in the first stage

In Pool 1, pick of the first-round matches was young ‘hot-shot’ Ashley (Target Bar A) against last year’s winner Pete (The Swan), which saw age overcoming youth with Pete going through.
However the final saw the first of many upsets with Pete against host team player and team captain Claire. She kept her nerve and dispatched the champion 2-0, booking her place in the last 16.

Pool Two saw another major upset with Jambo (Hammers A), who lost only two matches out of 40 in the league, getting knocked out in the semi final. The pool was later won by Alex, from Los Toscales.

There was a massive grudge match in Torviscas. Last week, The Swan won a controversial Cup semi-final against the Hammers A, and in the singles, Hammers’ skipper Barry faced Swan’s Craig.
Well, a form of revenge was served ice-cold as Barry blew Craig away in just eight minutes. Craig potted the black with his second shot in the first frame and the hapless Swan had to suffer the embarrassment of being the first player out as Barry comfortably won the second frame.
It was a bittersweet win, though, as Barry lost the final to Lee from Bar Nauta.

A group seen as a possible “pool of death” saw three top-16 players in the same draw. Carl defeated an out-of-sorts Aaron, and then Dave, of Trap Door A, was defeated by Steve from the Cygnents.
Steve then booked his place in the last 16 with victory over Mark from The Swan.
Highly-touted players such as Bungalow (Swan) and Wez (Hammers A) also missed out, but three from Red League champions Palms Bar went through.
Roscoe, last year’s singles semi-finalist, will be joined by team-mates Graham, who is ranked third, and Graeme, who got through a tough heat at Los Toscales.
This Tuesday it’s the doubles event. Players please note: it’s 7.30pm for an 8pm start
