The municipal government will compensate residents the neighbours by freezing the cost of garbage collection.
Jose Miguel Rodriguez Fraga announced that the increase of 2.19% forecast for this year is cancelled and will be implemented in the next financial year instead. The mayor also explained that the council is considering punishing the concessionaire service for breach of contract during the weeks of the strike.
The cost of garbage collection in the town of Adeje will not rise this year despite the fact that the increase for 2008, fixed at 2.19%, has already been approved. This was announced yesterday by the mayor, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, accompanied by the councillor, Gonzalo Delgado.
The initiative was described as compensation to the residents "for the strike in the service," said the president of the local authority, who indicated that the planned increase for the current financial year will be implemented in 2009.
Rodriguez Fraga emphasised that the measure will give some 120,000 euros of savings to all citizens by the "freezing" of this fee, as residents continue to be paid as provided for the financial year 2007.
In addition, the mayor and councillor stressed that the local government is "studying the possibility of sanctioning" the company dealership service collection and street cleaning, Ascan-Torrabonaf, "for not having complied with the contract" during the strike that lasted nearly three weeks.
In this regard stated that they were aware of the labour dispute, "but there is a contract that says the dealership is committed to collecting garbage and cleaning the road 365 days a year," so that this matter "is in the hands of legal services ".
They also emphasised that the cost for the removal of the waste ordered by the government due to the health risks has meant a payout of 16,000 euros and they’re now studying "who should bear that cost," the council or Ascan-Torrabonaf.
