Joseba means business

JUST a few hours after receiving a new, one-year contract, CD Tenerife coach Joseba Etxeberria set about laying the foundations for next season.

The 40-year-old, former Athletic Bilbao player, arrived in February, missing the January transfer window. But he is determined to make up for lost time.

He is working with the club’s Sporting Director, Alfonso Serrano, clearing out players to make room for a new-look squad.

Midfield veteran Vitolo is the biggest name to walk, even though he had another year left on his contract. He turns 35 in September and has played 221 games in two spells with the club.

Alex Mula has returned to Malaga at the end of his loan deal, and Samuele Longo, who top-scored last season with 12 goals, has gone back to parent club Inter Milan, after a loan season peppered with injuries.

Goalkeeper Carlos Abad, in search of more regular games, has asked to leave. And though defender Jorge Saenz might stay, the club will listen to any offers for him.

Joseba, looking to influence all aspects of the club, wants tougher pre-season friendlies, as well as changes to the technical and medical staff. The players will soon find out, when they to training on 11th July.
