TENERIFE Sur Lions Club held its 27th Presidents’ Night Gala Dinner last Saturday at the prestigiousHotelParadiseParkin Los Cristianos.

Some 85 members and guests, including British Consul Maria Leng, gathered on the terrace for pre-dinner drinks and canapés.

It was a time to enjoy meeting old and new friends in a convivial atmosphere, prior to the formal duties and speeches of the evening to usher in a new Club President.

Later, Ken Sadler, presiding Master of Ceremonies, introduced outgoing PresidentPhilGlock to perform his final duties by presenting the club annual awards.

The “Lion of the Year” award went to Colin Slade for his efforts in organising the club’s “Dream Holiday” project.

Philspoke much of the club’s achievements for the year, and he thanked fellow members for their support, concluding his term as President by handing over the Chain of Office to incoming President Norman Goodall MBE.

Norman, a great club stalwart of many years, has held the office on more than one occasion before.

With the inauguration ceremony over, everyone moved into the dining area to “Welcome In” the new President, his Lady, Edna Goodall, and Guest of Honour Maria Leng, before the Gala Dinner service.

Following the Grace, the British Consul to the Canary Islands was called upon to give the Loyal Toasts to His Majesty King Carlos ofSpainand Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

In his presidential speech,Normandrew attention to the fact that “Lions Clubs, by the very nature of their code ‘We Serve’, will always be there when help is needed.”

He went on to say: “At this particular time of financial austerity, Tenerife Sur Lions Club is prepared to act as a shield, or beacon of hope, whether it be for an individual, a family or group who need help and support.”

Challenging the assembled company he concluded by saying: “Now is the time Lions are needed more than ever in our Community – could you be a Lion?”

The Gala Dinner, a beautifully-presented five-course meal, was much appreciated, allied to the excellent service of good wines and finishing up with coffee and liqueurs.

The evening was then complemented by music, dancing and entertainment.

Ian Anderson, a regular Lions’ favourite, brought his unique blend of Music for Dining, together with two excellent cabaret acts, featuring Dion’s foot-tapping Rock’n’Roll Show and the fabulous sound of the Tuxedo Knights, which soon had everyone ready to dance the night away.

During the cabaret, the Tenerife Sur Lions Club took the opportunity to present an appreciation award to Eric Viana and Denise Bell, of Viana Shows, for their support of the club.

A big thanks of appreciation must go to all who worked so hard behind the scenes to make the evening the obvious success it was.

In particular, thanks to Beryl Sadler, who designed and arranged the table decorations, seating plan and memento brochure, not forgetting the staff and management of theHotelParadisePark. And hats off to all the waiters and kitchen staff, for whom nothing was too much trouble.
