Fire Update: PRESS CONFERENCE 1.06pm.

Javier González Ortíz (Minister for security):
LA PALMA – status has been reduced to level 1 and roads are opening to traffic again during the afternoon.

TENERIFE – Developments have been a little more positive this morning. Many people are still unable to return home but it is hoped that they will be able to soon (no definite time given).

Ricardo Melchior (President of Tenerife Cabildo):
TENERIFE – The flanks are under control in ‘the majority’ of areas, except around Tágara. It is hoped that this area will be stabilised in the next few hours. Efforts are being concentrated now in the Guía de Isora flank, and due to the more stable and positive outlook around Vilaflor, the air support has been dispatched to the west flank. Presence has been increased here, but it was stressed that the priority earlier HAD to be in the more densely populated areas (Vilaflor).

Humberto Gutiérrez (Civil Protection engineer / head of operations):
The perimeter has been contained (see the link below for the image) within the green line apart from one small area at the northernmost point at the edge of the crater, due to difficulty of access. In Ifonche, the UME (Emergency Military Unit) is remaining to keep the perimeter secure. The active front is ‘stable’. Te fire is advancing on the north west side, but remains inside the perimeter and is advancing slowly due to comparatively favourable conditions.
