http://www.flickr.com/photos/canarianweeklytenerife/8800926823/THE Canarian Weekly reaches far and wide, and we have received a plea for help from a concerned daughter in Australia.

Thieves, believed to be schoolchildren, recently broke into the Abades home of 70-year-old widower Roger Scott and ransacked the property.

Fortunately, little was taken except some loose change but, sadly, the intruders also made off with the box containing the ashes of his late wife, Pat.

Now, his eldest daughter Debbie is obviously anxious for the box to be recovered for her father’s sake.

She told us: “Dad is okay in himself until he looks at the china cabinet and Mom is not there.

“He does have a lovely big picture of Mom, which he kisses goodnight, but it’s not the same as having her there with him.”

Roger believes youngsters are to blame because of the nature of the burglary, and they probably didn’t realise the significance of the pretty box, or read the plaque.

He is not interested in catching the thieves; he just wants the box back with, hopefully, the ashes intact.

So if you’ve seen it, or are aware of someone who has it, then let the Canarian Weekly know at editor@canarianweekly.com or call 902 232 102.

If you walk around the Abades area, be extra vigilant as the box may have been discarded somewhere.

Roger and Pat “retired” to Tenerife more than eight years ago from Birmingham, where they raised five children and ran The Forge pub in Digbeth.

But old habits don’t fade, and they soon came out of retirement to open The Village Bar in Abades, only to put their feet up some years later.

Sadly, Patricia passed away in October 2010 at the age of 69 after being diagnosed with cancer.

As you can imagine, Roger was distraught because her ashes were his only solace.

The light wooden box containing the ashes has three cream roses on the front and a brass plaque, with details of Patricia Mary Scott.

Debbie added: “When you have been with someone for 50 years, it is hard to be without them, and Dad has only the picture of Mum left. It would mean so much to him to get her ashes back.”

If you know anything about the theft, please get in touch with Canarian Weekly.

The police are not involved with the incident, and all we’re interested in is getting the ashes back to the grieving widower.

THE soldier murdered on a London street has been named as Drummer Lee Rigby, from Manchester.

The 25-year-old, from the 2nd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, was hacked down in cold blood by two men wielding knives, a meat cleaver and other weapons near the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich, in front of shocked onlookers. He leaves behind a two-year-old son.

Two men are under arrest in hospital after being shot by police near the barracks on Wednesday afternoon, in the aftermath of the attack.

Two other people, – a man and a woman, both aged 29 – were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, following raids on properties in London and Saxilby, in connection with the attack.

The main suspects, a 22-year-old and his companion, Michael Adebolajo, were known to security services, according to sources.

Witnesses said the attackers shouted “Allah” as they set about killing him brutally.

The victim’s name was announced by the Ministry of Defence pending formal police identification.

Police have issued an appeal for anyone who has still or moving images of the incident to email them to their incident room.

They asked anyone sending in images to include their name and contact details which, they said, would be treated in the strictest confidence.

Ingrid Loyau-Kenned, a cub scout leader and mother-of-two, recalled the moment she confronted the alleged attackers and warned them: “You are going to lose.”

Another witness, James Heneghan, said the soldier had been attacked with kitchen knives like he was “a piece of meat”. He told LBC radio: “They were hacking at this poor guy, literally.”

One passer-by filmed Adeboloja holding a bloodied meat cleaver and saying: “We must fight them as they fight us. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.

Incredibly, he carried on, saying: “I apologise that women have had to witness this today, but in our land our women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your government, they don’t care about you.”

A Ministry of Defence statement read: “An extremely popular and witty soldier, Drummer Rigby was a larger-than-life personality within the Corps of Drums and was well known, liked and respected across the Second Fusiliers.”

Commanding officer Lt Col Jim Taylor said of Drummer Rigby: “An experienced and talented side-drummer and machine-gunner, he was a true warrior and served with distinction in Afghanistan, Germany and Cyprus.”

Capt Alan Williamson said: “Drummer Rigby, or ‘Riggers’ as he was known within the platoon, was a cheeky and humorous man, always there with a joke to brighten the mood.”

Prime Minister David Cameron said outside 10 Downing Street yesterday (Thursday) that said the attacks were “solely and purely” the responsibility of the individuals involved.

More than 24 hours after the killing, Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said: “Everyone in Defence is shocked and saddened by the events of yesterday. This was a senseless murder of a soldier who has served the Army faithfully in a variety of roles, including operational tours in Afghanistan.

“Our thoughts today are with his family and loved ones, who are trying to come to terms with this terrible loss.”

Mr Hammond, when asked if the attack showed how vulnerable soldiers were, whether in uniform or not, replied: “I think it reminds us how vulnerable we all are, but it also reminds us, by the response of the public, that we are not going to be cowed by this kind of terrorist action.”

Shortly after the killing, a man thought to be 28-year-old Mr Adebolajo, was filmed by a passer-by, saying he carried out the attack because British soldiers killed Muslims every day.

Sources said reports that the men had featured in “several investigations” in recent years – but were not deemed to be planning an attack – “were not inaccurate”.

They confirmed one of the suspects was intercepted by police last year while leaving the country.

According to BBC sources, Mr Adebolajo, a Briton of Nigerian descent, comes from a devout Christian family, but took up Islam after leaving college in 2001.

In other developments:

The Metropolitan Police said police officers arrived within nine minutes of the first 999 call, and armed officers were there within 14 minutes

An increased police presence was in Woolwich and the surrounding areas throughout last night and would be there “as long as needed”, said Mark Rowley, Assistant Commissioner for Specialist Crime and Operations.

With dozens of witnesses to the killing, police are urging them to contact the Met’s anti-terrorism hotline with any information they may have.

Sir David Richards, Chief of Defence Staff General, said: “It’s always a tragedy, and it’s particularly poignant that it happened on the streets of this capital city of ours.

“We’re absolutely determined not to be intimated into not doing the right thing - whether it’s here in this country or in Afghanistan, or wherever we seek to serve the nation.”

Security at Woolwich Barracks and others in London has been increased, and Gen Richards added: “I’m confident that base security is as tight as it’s ever been, and necessarily so.

“It’s a very difficult balancing act. We are very proud of the uniform we wear; we have huge support around the country; this is a completely isolated incident.”

The Prime Minister said: “We will never give in to terror or terrorism in any of its forms.”

Mr Cameron highlighted the actions of Ingrid Loyau-Kennett, saying it demonstrated that “confronting extremism is a job for us all”.

BBC defence correspondent Caroline Wyatt said that since British forces intervened in Iraq and Afghanistan, they and their families had been well aware they might be targets at home.

And the Muslim Council of Britain said it had received “reports of hate attacks and abuse faced by mosques and individual Muslims following the inexcusable and criminal murder”.

At least two plots by Islamist extremists to kill soldiers in the UK have been foiled by security forces in recent years.

The awards are a celebration of cycling in the capital, showcasing ground-breaking new cycling initiatives, as well as highlighting the best community and youth cycling projects. Over 2,500 people voted and Heathrow beat stiff competition from The Guardian and RoehamptonUniversity to win in its category

The Cycle Hub is the only one of its kind operating at an airport in the country. Since launching two years ago 1,700 people have joined, resulting in an almost 45% increase in employees cycling to work at Heathrow – with up to 570 people doing so every day. It offers a ‘one stop shop’ for cyclists, including a cycle purchase scheme and free cycle maintenance for airport employees, maintenance training and emergency call-outs for mechanical problems. The Cycle Hub was created in partnership with Transport for London, with TfL providing 430 parking stands to Heathrow.

Alongside the Cycle Hub, Heathrow has many measures in place to help both employees and local residents who don’t work at the airport, travel to and around it in an environmentally friendly way. Heathrow operates the only free travel zone in the world, which includes 15 local bus services, and free travel between terminals for all staff and passengers on the underground.

Allan Gregory, Director for Surface Access at Heathrow, said: “It’s great that our Cycle Hub is being recognised and we’re delighted with this award. We want to keep the Cycle Hub growing and want to extend its reach within the local community and surrounding businesses, whilst continuing to support commuters travelling to work sustainably.”

Ben Plowden, Director of Planning Surface Transport at TfL, said: “We are delighted that Heathrow has won this award. Our partnership with Heathrow to create the new Cycle Hub has had such a positive impact on the local workforce, encouraging more people than ever before to enjoy the benefits and freedom of taking to two wheels.”

Mike Gormally, the Heathrow employee who nominated the Cycle Hub, said “When I realised just how well the Hub was doing I was really keen to put Heathrow forwards. Cycling to work is brilliant, it helps to save money, gets you some fresh air and exercise, and of course it helps cut down on road traffic too. Naturally it can be daunting starting out, but initiatives like The Cycle Hub are a great support, regardless of whether you’re making those first tentative outings or have been cycling for years.”

The new type of fare, which launched back in February, is already proving popular with customers on the initial five destinations from Gatwick – Amsterdam, Dubrovnik, Jersey, Tunis and Turin.

Additional hand baggage only routes now on offer include Genoa and Glasgow from only £39 one-way. For those wanting some summer sunshine, fares to Barcelona, Nice and Venice all start from £49 one-way.

Peter Simpson, director of Gatwick for British Airways, said: “The new fares have been very well received by customers and we have now decided to make the discounted prices much more widely available.

“We are confident that they will prove popular during the busy summer season as short-haul customers continue to take advantage of our generous two-bag hand luggage policy. Those who still want to check in a bag will simply pay the same price they do now.”

Customers choosing the “hand baggage only” fare can continue to take advantage of the airline’s hand luggage allowance and carry on a good-sized case (56cm x 45cm x 25cm), plus a handbag or laptop bag.

Children enjoy the same hand luggage allowance as adults, so families can take advantage of the new fare by combining their allowances. Families can also take buggies to the aircraft side, bring on a child seat and enjoy free seat allocation three days in advance of travel.

All British Airways’ short-haul customers will continue to receive free seat allocation within 24 hours of departure, priority boarding for families, complimentary food and drink, high levels of customer service and a frequent flyer programme that rewards them with Avios and tier points.

To make the new fare clear and easy for customers to identify, ba.com has been redesigned with a special symbol flagging the fare throughout the booking process.

Atletico Madrid B 0 CD Marino 1

CDT wound down their home league campaign in low-key style as they were chinned by lowly Alcala for the second season running.

The result isn’t worth a tin of beans, unless you are a fan of Alcala. In that case, their battle to avoid the drop rolls into the final weekend.

For Tenerife fans, what should have been a celebration of winning the division turned into a damp squib.

In fact, the afternoon had the feeling of a wet January Sunday afternoon, when you were stuck at your grannies playing gin rummy. Nobody really bothered with what was in front of them.

The Tenerife side were unrecognisable from the first-choice line-up, and we also smothered a few myths. “Give the kids a chance,” is an often-used mantra. Well, Tenerife boss Alavero Cervera did just that - and it didn’t work!

Ayose proved he is no lone striker, while fans will pray that Sergio Aragoneses doesn’t get injured or red-carded in the play-offs.

Young pup Roberto made his senior debut in goal and, hand on heart, he’s rubbish. Harsh?

Maybe, but even a competent school keeper knows when and when not to go for a cross.

His rush of blood on the stroke of half-time gifted Garcia with what would turn out to be Alcala’s winner.

Meanwhile, on the mainland, CD Marino continued their fine recent form with a stunning win at Atletico B.

Honestly, they have been a revelation since February. So, with just the pointless away trip to Salamanca on Sunday before the draw is made for the play-offs on Monday, it’s time to focus on the end of season fun.

Tenerife will play home and away to the winners of either section 2, 3 or 4. So what do we know about them?

ALAVES

THE side to avoid. Just like Tenerife, they are in the wrong standard. Someone obviously broke a mirror because they have had seven years of bad luck.

La Liga regulars until a financial implosion, they so nearly won the UEFA Cup in 2001. They played one of the finest finals ever, but were edged out 5-4 by Liverpool. Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Jamie Carragher were among the Liverpool players that balmy night in Dortmund.

Mind you, Alaves had Jordi Cruyff, Javi Moreno and Cosmin Contra in their line-up.

They dropped out of La Liga in 2006 and went down again a few years later. And though they have retained the support, money problems have held them back.

But this year, everything has clicked under Natxo Gonzalez. They have amassed an impressive 79 points and have lost only twice at home, and both 1-0.

But it’s their away form which has really caught the eye. They have lost just once since Christmas and that was the only time they haven’t netted away ALL SEASON. Viguera is their top scorer, but he’s no world-beater.

He certainly didn’t look anything special when I saw him play for Albacete last season. But Alaves have goals all over the park.

They are a big side, well-organised and cherry-ripe. They were pushed all the way by Eibar and, make no mistake, they look a better side than Tenerife.

L’HOSPITALET

THE boys from Catalonia have work to do if they are to make Monday’s draw. They have a two-point lead over Huracan, but they have a tricky home match with play-off chasers Olimpic.

They also have 79 points, but there is no doubt that this is the weakest section.

The top five sides are head and shoulders ahead of the rest, even with Villarreal’s B team in this section.

L’Hospitalet have not tasted second-tier football since England won the World Cup, and to be where they are is quite an achievement.

They are full of journeymen, but manager Jordi Vinyals has got them playing some good football. He had a fine playing career and he has brought the team on during his third spell at the club.

They have the section’s top scorer in Cirio, and the 28-year-old is backed up well by Bakary. He is a handful and should be playing at a higher level, as his 48 goals in three seasons demonstrates.

Their free-flowing football sees them bag lots of goals, but, in a weak division, their defence is porous.

They will be awkward at home, but very beatable in Santa Cruz, and Tenerife would be strong favourites against L’Hospitalet.

REAL JAEN

IT has been 10 years since the Andalusians graced the second tier, but they have been knocking on the promotion door for the last five years.

They must hate the play-offs! Manolo Herrero is the latest manager to try to force them over the line, and they have had a remarkable season.

Big-spending Cartagena were everyone’s tip to win this section, with fellow big-guns Albacete and Cadiz not too far behind.

While the last two have had a horror campaign, Cartagena have never been off Jaen’s coat-tails.

Jaen’s success is built on their rock-solid defence. For a team top of the table, they have scored just 43 goals in 37 games! Second-bottom CD San Roque have notched 44.

That’s even more amazing when you consider they scored five on the opening day of the season against Villanovense.

They have lost just once at home, and have conceded just 12 goals in 19 away games. This shows them to be well-drilled, disciplined and patient.

They should beat San Fernando on Sunday, and they will be a real danger in the play-offs. You wouldn’t want to be chasing a tie against these boys. Dangerous.

Should Tenerife lose the two-legged tie, then they will be paired with one of the sides who have finished second, third or fourth in the last eight of the play-offs.

Win that and they face another two-legged tie before going up.

Fingers-crossed, this scenario will not happen. And, fingers-crossed, we don’t get Alaves in Monday’s draw!

The long-time leaders have spluttered in recent weeks and they have finally been toppled from their perch.

They suffered a shock 7-5 home defeat as Picasso’s claimed their prize scalp in the Torviscas derby.

This gave Exiles A a chance to grab the bull by the horns, and they were never in trouble at home to Bar 13.

The 11-1 scoreline showed their complete dominance, and though they still have a few tricky matches to play, they are odds-on favourites to take the title.

In fact, it was great night for Exiles as the B team stunned third-place Treehouse A 7-5.

Greg’s guys were never at the races, and Exiles B showed again that they can be a match for the top teams.

Bluebell A returned to winning ways as they got revenge over Hoppys, and Shortys also won 7-5. coming through at Toscales B.

Inn The Pink B are finishing nicely. They accounted for TPT 9-3, while Palms and Gaffers B shared the spoils in Wednesday’s make-up match.

Tenerife Hammers A took another stride towards the Division One title as they overcame a dogged Peacocks side 9-3.

The game was closer than the scoreline suggests, but Hammers A were always in charge. They need just a few more wins, and second-place Gaffers A need snookers.

An 8-4 win at Inn The Pink A is perfectly acceptable, but they need Hammers A to slip up. Twice!

The battle for third is going to the wire. Phoenix Potters are in pole position after spanking Terrace Bar B 11-1.

Only Pat got on the scoreboard for the hosts, and the Potters will be delighted to have extended their frames advantage over Palms A. They edged past Toscales 7-5 to keep their good run going.

Phoenix Knights left it late before beating Terrace Bar A, while Dreamers returned to the win column with a bang. Only Steve and Mark dropped frames, as they beat La Caña 10-2. BOOM!

The 38-year-old East Londoner, has become a household figure throughout the world, and has made a fortune, said to be around £165 million, via football and his off-pitch activities, including promotional work for high-profile companies.

As well as winning league titles in Spain, Italy and England, he also holds the record for making 115 international appearances as an England outfield player.

Beckham, who kicked off his career at Manchester United and moved on to Real Madrid, Los Angeles and, briefly, Galaxy AC Milan, will reject an extended, one-year deal at current club Paris Saint-Germain. (PSG).

After winning the French title with the club, Beckham said he wanted to finish his career on a high.

“I’m thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue, but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level,” he said.

“If you had told me as a young boy that I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club, Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over 100 times, and lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy. I’m fortunate to have realised those dreams.”

He added: “To this day, one of my proudest achievements is captaining my country. I knew every time I wore the Three Lions shirt, I was not only following in a long line of great players, but I was also representing every fan who cared passionately about his country. I’m honoured to represent England both on and off the pitch.”

Beckham, who was born in Leytonstone, has recently taken up a number of high-profile roles off the pitch.

He is the currently ambassador for Chinese football, and last month teamed up with Sky to champion the benefits of youth sport.

He married Victoria Adams – better known as Posh Spice in the record-breaking Spice Girls pop group – while at Man United, and they have three sons and a daughter.

Online sales at John Lewis have passed the £1bn mark on a rolling 52 week basis, alongside a successful launch of a new multi-million pound web platform. The milestone comes a year ahead of the retailer’s forecast, which had estimated reaching £1bn of sales in 2014.

The department store has invested nearly £40m in its new website during the three year project, which is the foundation for future online growth and its customer-focused omnichannel strategy.

Mark Lewis, who has recently joined the retailer as online director, said: “Passing the £1bn milestone almost an entire year ahead of schedule is a fantastic achievement for us, and a reflection of how central online shopping has become to our customers.

“We have a leading omnichannel strategy which our customers love, but to continue to deliver the service our customers want, we need a website which will serve us as well as the old one did, and maintain our position as a leading innovator in online retailing.”

The new website features new functionality including an enhanced wish list function, search history, and more inspirational content, with more customer-focused functionality planned for the future. With mobile now accounting for over 25% of traffic to johnlewis.com, the retailer has also revamped its mobile offer to mirror the creative design of the main site, and plans to launch a new app with details to follow later this year.

Paul Coby, IT director at John Lewis, said: “With sales up over 40% for johnlewis.com in 2012, we are seeing an unprecedented pace of online growth and customers are making more demands on our website, than ever before.

“The billion-pound success of johnlewis.com is a reflection of our strategy to put the customer at the heart of our online operations. Early testing at every stage of the build, and inviting over 3 million customers to use our beta site before full launch, has resulted in what we believe will be an outstanding experience and journey for customers.

“We have designed the new site to incorporate the best features of our previous site making it not only easy and intuitive to use, but inspiring to shop.”

The site also features a prominent feedback form, which generates around 300 pieces of feedback a day, which the retailer will use to prioritise issues and spot trends.
