Coaches jump through hoops

Basketball

SO much for a restful summer! Coach Fotios Katsikaris jumped ship within days of Iberostar Tenerife’s season reaching an early conclusion in the play-off championship.

The Greek, who has been in negotiations with Malaga to run their bench, has one eye on a move to New York’s NBA team Brooklyn Nets.

This time last year, coach Txus Vidorretta quit to join Valencia after a superb season, which saw Tenerife win the inaugural European Champions League.

In came Naned Markovich from Bosnia and Herzegovia, who had a wealth of experience in Spain, Israel, and Greece. But after a good start, the team’s form faded and he was gone within two months.

Katsikaris was next through the revolving door, his season blowing hot and cold. Yet he had shown promise, and a summer of rebuilding was expected with him at the helm.

Now, sensibly, Tenerife’s management want to take stock and not rush into a new appointment. But they have expressed a preference for a Spanish coach this time.
