Child left ‘mortified’ over a reindeer head

A MOTHER persuaded her local shopping centre to remove a plastic reindeer head from a fund-raising Christmas grotto because her son was “mortified”.

The Mall, in Maidstone, Kent, apologised and withdrew the decoration from its Christmas grotto after the child asked his mum if the animal had been killed.

Adele Keen forced the removal of the seasonal decoration,

mounted on a wall, after complaining on social media.

Her shocked son even asked whether Santa “had killed his

reindeer”, and, said Adele: “I tried to move on quickly so he was not too scared,  and that his Christmas reindeer beliefs weren’t crushed.”

Another less-than-impressed shopper tweeted that the display was “inappropriate”. But despite removing the decoration, the shopping centre said it had been put up to complement the fund -raising grotto’s medieval theme.

Marketing manager Suzie Brindle told Sky News: “Each year the grotto features a different theme, and this time it’s medieval castle, the plastic deer’s head forming part of it.”

She added. “Having heard that the display was causing concern, we took steps to remove the decoration after opening hours, which complies with health and safety regulations. We apologise for any upset caused.”

The shopping centre’s annual Christmas grotto had already raised more than £200,000 for various charities, having been open for little more than a week.
